Minoan and Mycenaean Civilization

- Enjoyed prosperity and a Buerocratic society
- Elegant culture andd social organization, active trade with Egypt, Syria, Sicily and Spain
- 2 class society: ruling and common people
- Textiles were spun woven and dyed, bright colors and elaborate patterns were common
- Men and women wore tunics
- Men had small waists and wore wrapped skirts
- Women wore long skirts with horizontal bands and and bodices bearing chest
- Dark curly hair and accessories popular
- Myceneans took power over Minoans in 1400 B.C. but maintained similar style of dress
Greek Civilization
(650 B.C.- 300 B.C.)
- Greek costume was draped, not cut and sewn so fabric was woven to the correct size
- Different types of tunics were worn such as the ionic chiton (pinned at the shoulder and down the arm), doric peplos (tunic with a fold over the top edge), doric chiton (fastened at shoulders with less fabric)
- Himation was worn by both men and women (a wrapped shawl that left one arm exposed)
